Chylack Incorporated (CI) was established in October 2009 via an exclusive license agreement with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston to offer ongoing training in LOCS methods of classifying lens opacification. Prior to this date, Dr. Chylack provided LOCS training under a program administered by the BWH. 

    Dr. Chylack is available to consult regarding the most effective way to leverage the benefits of LOCS III.

LEO T. CHYLACK, JR, MD Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology
Dr. Chylack has served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) from 1971 thru 1999 and has broad general ophthalmological experience. He was also Director of Research at the Center for Clinical Cataract Research and later at the expanded Center for Ophthalmic Research also at the BWH. He served also as Vice-Chairman (Research) in the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and held academic appointments at Harvard ranging from Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, and Professor of Ophthalmology. He retired from the BWH and HMS on August 1, 2009 and is now Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology at HMS. He has served on the Editorial Board of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science and as reviewer for many of the major ophthalmic journals. During the past 40 years he has consulted for most of the major pharmaceutical companies on general and cataract-specific ophthalmological issues.

Dr. Chylack completed his undergraduate work in biochemistry at Yale University graduating summa cum laude in 1960. He received his medical degree and membership in the honorary medical fraternity, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) from Harvard Medical School in 1964. He completed his internship on the II & IV Harvard Medical Service at Boston City Hospital in 1964, his term as Chief Peace Corps Physician in Peru 1965-1967, a fellowship in lens biochemistry at Howe Laboratory of Ophthalmology in 1969, and a residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1971. He was board certified in ophthalmology in 1972.

Academic Appointments: Dr. Chylack has held various academic appointments at Harvard Medical School for almost 40 years, and currently serves as Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology. He served as Vice-Chairman (Research) from 1997-2008 and has been a member of the Executive Committee in the Department of Ophthalmology since 1989. He previously held appointments as Associate Professor of Health Sciences and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and as an HST Affiliate at Harvard-MIT, Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He also holds the title of Scientist at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

Clinical Appointments: Dr. Chylack’s previous principal clinical responsibilities have included serving as Chief in the Divisions of Ophthalmology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Director of Research at the Center for Clinical Cataract Research, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and as Director of Research at the Center for Ophthalmic Research, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has served as well as Consultant in Ophthalmology at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Beth Israel Hospital, and New England Deaconess Hospital. He served as Senior Surgeon (Adjunct, Surgery/ Ophthalmology) at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and is on the Emeritus Staff (Ophthalmology) at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Professional Leadership: For over 35 years, Dr. Chylack has been invited to lecture worldwide and to organize, moderate, and chair major symposia. He has been Vice-President and a Trustee for the Lens Section in the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and has served the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the European Association for Vision and Eye Research. He has served on many prestigious national and regional committees. He served as Editor of the Lens Section and Editorial Board member for Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science and a reviewer of manuscripts for Experimental Eye Research, Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Current Eye Research, Photochemistry and Photobiology, Human Biology, Diabetes, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ophthalmology, and New England Journal of Medicine.  He has authored or co-authored hundreds of original articles, reviews, books, or book chapters. He has received numerous awards and honors. Research Interests: Dr. Chylack’s research interests include age-related and other forms of lens opacification and cataract, and clinical testing of potential anti-cataractous medications. His research has been supported by various governmental grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the US Department of Agriculture, as well as various private grants. He has several patents.
